The 2026 New York Mets cannot seem to do anything right as far as the offseason is concerned. From letting first baseman Pete Alonso and elite closer Edwin Diaz walk and sign with other teams, the fans aren’t left with much to look forward to as far as star talent is concerned. There are quite a few reasons to boycott this year, and I will explain.
Heading into the year, the main amd primary concern remained Alonso’s comtract. As you may recall, the team opted to offer a subsequential smaller amount, which I believed was more to come, which Alonso declined. Alonso followed up a rather underwhelming 2024 with a productive 2025, in which he hit well, he hit 38 home runs batted .272, driving in a whopping 126 runs.
With that being said, it was time for the team to re-sign their homegrown talent. What they proceeded to choose shocked the fans and baseball world alike.
The team owner and billionaire, Steve Cohen, didn’t even offer any sort of amount or deal to Alonso.
The fan favorite, beloved “Polar bear” as he was infamously dubbed, signed with the Baltimore Orioles.
Need I say more? No Brandon Nimmo, No Edwin Diaz. Just Juan Soto.
I personally believe that the team is not headed in the right direction or going to attempt to be contenders. Differentiating reality from hopes is something that has to happen for fans. The harsh reality remains the fact that ownership is the issue, and the higher ups cannot seem to get it together.
When hopes get high and expectations are unrealistic that also creates an unnecessary scenario.
The truth is, Steve Cohen was careless with his money, overspending on Soto. His pride got in the way with re-signing Alonso.
The team is a triple A team at best. If you do attend this laughable mess in Queens, at least the menu is awesome.
