The 2025 New York Mets have had their work cut out for them ever since they got mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. From several gaping holes in the lineup, and questions surrounding the starting pitching rotation alongside the future of First Baseman Pete Alonso, now the bullpen has a potential need to be filled. Here’s more.
The two big name closers for the Mets in 2025 were none other than Ryan Helsley and Edwin Diaz. Diaz has been lights out dominant while his counterpart Helsley had struggled, making the case for Diaz to be the go to in every situation.
Both entered free agency but it is realistic to believe only one will be re-signed for 2026.
Diaz wowed in 2025, going 6-3 with a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves.
After carrying the team in 2022, it only makes sense that he is locked up and signed long term.
The team struggled year and year even with Diaz, but with big name Right Fielder Juan Soto, 27, being added to the lineup, the dynamics could shift once more pieces are added to complete the puzzle.
Without Diaz, they will regress. With Diaz, there is one less worry.
The team has so much to get done this offseason, primarily focusing on longtime deals that are needed.
