The 2026 New York Mets performed catastrophically badly. From letting Pete Alonso slip away in the offseason to stranding runners in scoring position, it was a terrible look. Billionaire owner Steve Cohen and his mediocre management crew have a frugal way of managing still. Even with naturally gifted leaders, the team wont appoint another team captain.
The players gravitate towards Shortstop Fransisco Lindor. A 32 year old star that has become the organization’s leader, he still has not been recognized by Cohen as captain material. Cohen has said he wishes to not have a team captain.
It is appalling. It’s outrageous and downright disappointing.
Lindor often enters his own name into MVP conversations by his athletic abilities. Add his exceptional defensive capabilities and Grade A leadership qualities and his off the field professionalism, and you have the perfect captain candidate.
Cohen will rarely see this type of talent matched with professionalism come around again in 10 years. Lindor always has a smile on his face.
By choosing to adhere to his confusing principles, he is wasting the golden years of one of baseball’s most talented and kind.
The Yankees got it right with Aaron Judge. This is why the Mets will always be the laughingstock of MLB.
