The 2026 New York Mets came in last place after spending nearly a billion dollars last offseason. From inking Outfielder Juan Soto to a $765 million dollar deal to disappointing millions of long time Mets faithful, there has to be obvious changes made. While Soto is here to stay, others must be let go to preserve what is left of the team and introduce a winning culture to Queens. Hereโs 3 players that need to go.
- Kodai Senga
Senga had an incredible first season in Queens, but it unraveled from there and never got better. He put up impressive numbers in year 1, introduced the league to the ghost fork pitch, but was in โghost modeโ and couldnโt stay healthy since his sophomore year. Coming over from Japan seemed like a breeze to the hopeful Senga, but now he is a liability once he starts. The team cannot afford to depend on him anymore, as his time in Queens has undeniably come to a tough end.
2. Brett Baty.
People were really hyped to see Baty develop into the next best thing at third base, but unfortunately, heโs never even looked close to solid as far as defense or offense is concerned. His recurring defensive mishaps have cost the team, and his ever cold bat never seems to warm up. He can have moments where he hits, gets on base, but hasnโt had one full consistent year yet. That exactly screams โdisappointment.โ It shows the development hasnโt panned out, and itโs quite possible Baty cannot handle playing in New York. Much like Senga, itโs time to put the Baty experiment to an end.
3. Fransisco Alvarez.
Alvarez is one of the people who I hate to list here but thereโs a rational decision making reason behind it. Although Alvarez hits with power, he is often hurt, which in turn paves the way for solid defender and ever clutch C Luis Torrens to get starting opportunities.
Torrens is obviously very well respected by myself and the fans, who have voiced their growing support for him over the years. The potential trade value the team could get for Alvarez could be huge, which would benefit the team in more ways than one. Torrens is capable of holding down fort, and if the Mets could get a pitcher in return for Alvarez, Nolan McLean, who looks very promising, can have an effective counterpart to have that 1-2 punch in the rotation.
Trading away Alvarez would be sad, but such is an order of business that must be fulfilled.
Iโm going to do something different. Iโm going to ask the readers their thoughts on this. I like hearing from you guys. What exactly do you feel the Mets need to do differently? Thank you so much for your support over the years. You all are truly appreciated.
