The 2024 3rd place, 40-39 .506 are 8-2 in their last 10 games, being a half a game out of the wild card. Despite their recent success, several stars such as Starling Marte, Pete Alonso, and Jeff McNeil are likely headed out of New York at the deadline. Hereโs why certain moves the team may be linked to potentially making should be avoided at all costs.
The team started off historically bad, 0-4 while the team appeared โdeadโ before June. As far as current events are concerned, Jorge Lopez, former SP for the Mets, threw his glove into the stands in obvious frustration. He then went on to make a few statements implying that he was the worst teammate, but the media misconstrued what he was saying. He did say the โworst fucking teamโ in MLB, yet he backtracked.
Shortly after getting DFAโd following that scandal, Shortstop Fransisco Lindor took action and called a players only clubhouse meeting. Shortly after, hours later only, he went on to hit a 2 run blast.
The team has won 7 straight ever since Grimace, the purple McDonalds mascot, threw out the first pitch.
So that leaves many wondering why the team is still expected to shop half of the roster and potentially trade for power bat and current New York Yankees Outfielder Juan Soto.
The fact remains that, they simply should not go after Soto. Despite his bat being the primary reason the Yankees are in first place and on a roll, Alonso, 29, could fill the first base void that remains Anthony Rizzo. The top two potential landing spots for the two time Home Run Derby Champion winner, 2019 National League Rookie of the Year and the 3 time all star are the Chicago Cubs and the Yankees.
If youโre trading away your core and all of your talent, signing a huge player like Soto makes no sense whatsoever. The idea is to start from fresh. Developing home grown talent is ideal and wasting millions on a potential signing to be regretted down the line would simply push the team further away from their goal of playoff contention for years to come.
Itโs so easy to eye the competition and the market and say โIโve got the money, Iโll spend.โ
What if it all goes wrong? Rebuilding is tough, but when you commit to it fully, the rewards are so worth every risk taken.
So yes, I personally feel Juan Soto is a great guy to have on your team. He just does not align with the goals and direction this team is headed towards.
