The 2025 New York Mets lineup got a significant upgrade, offensively, at least, when they inked superstar Juan Soto to a 15 year, $765 million dollar deal this offseason. Here’s why Pete Alonso, 30, potentially got the short end of the stick in the deal negotiating his own deal with the franchise alongside his agent Scott Boras.
I’m not suggesting that billionaire owner Steve Cohen is broke and strapped for cash, I’m saying that he overpaid for Soto. While your beloved heart of the team star slugger Alonso still hasn’t signed, it can be attributed to a deflated ego from overpaying on an average defender in Soto, and therefore Alonso, who clearly irked the team by turning down several deals offered and choosing to “bet on oneself”, therefore lowering his market value.
All this has become potentially “overwhelming” for Cohen. Between having to meet the expectations of long time suffering Mets fans, expecting that money can buy a championship, and the pressure to contend with a promising team, Cohen has a chip on his shoulder. The league already has voiced their obvious displeasure towards Cohen as an owner.
As one commenter had suggested, Cohen being “taken to the cleaners” in the Soto deal, “his ego wouldn’t let that happen again” this is actually a very factual perspective in business. Baseball is a business, and when you make a “rash or impulsive move” you have to take all steps necessary to rectify the damage. Being cautious with Alonso was not on my expected list for 2025, but here we are.
Alonso is a two time home run derby champion, a four time all star, and the 2019 NL rookie of the year award winner. If you cannot appreciate 40 plus home runs a season projected some years, ever improving defense at first, and grade A leadership, you aren’t a true Mets fan.
Pete hasn’t even had a breakout year yet, and he’s entered his prime. He’s going to have that breakout year on another team, and this will all be on Cohen should he walk. Asking for 175-200 million is not greedy, that’s fair. You’re just upset because he bet on himself. Let’s be honest here.
You can lie to your friends, but you’re not going to lie to my face. If Pete betting on himself irked you so bad, I question you as a fan. Aren’t you the same fan who trashed and said “Francisco Lindor sucks” “I hate the Lindor deal. Guess what. You were wrong about Lindor and I told you years ago after year to be patient, now look. Get it together. Have faith in our players. This fan base has given up on our stars. That’s pathetic on so many levels.
Signing off. Let me sip my Red Bull energy drink in peace without you “Mets fans” irritating me. Think you know baseball. I’m sorry, what is the definition of a ground rule double? What time did Willie Randolph get fired? Who was Jason Phillips and where did he play? Without google please. I’ve seen and watched it all since I was 6 years old. Go argue with someone else please.
