The 2026 New York Mets had plenty of issues during their awful season. Coming in last place after spending nearly a billion dollars was laughable, and in this post, the potential reason for this mishap will be evaluated. Hereโs why I feel that stranding runners on base could be the silent issue that was hurting this team not only for the past year but for a few decades.
When you watch a baseball game, particularly a Mets game, you often notice small details. Why is the defense sloppy? Why are runners being stranded because someone strikes out? There were two runners left, they could have scored.
Such issues donโt get brought up, instead people tend to look at the production of lack of production of individual players. Oh, Lindor had a quiet year. Bichette could have did this better. You get my drift?
The issue as a whole is how the team is playing. Why are we letting runs go to waste? It adds up over time. Thatโs a team issue. Iโm not saying lack of production canโt be a team issue, as it surely can, but whenever I personally watch a game, I always pick up on the fact that I was hoping the two guys left on base would come home and score and they did not, which disappointed me.
It seems to happen each game Iโm watching, which is why I bring it up. Itโs easy to let things spiral and get out of hand, if you donโt notice the small details by being meticulous, you often wonโt solve the issue at hand.
The proof is in the pudding.
The team needs to deliver with runners in scoring position. That lies in fundamental issues, and in the hitting category as well.
Sure, it does sometimes happen where the team has a great inning and everyone comes in to score. Iโm talking about the early in the game moments where opportunities also lie and itโs overlooked because itโs โearly in the game.โ
No. Every runner counts. If you want to win, you have to play like a winner.
