The 2023 fourth place New York Mets didn’t offer their fans much in terms of excitement, to put it mildly. With star closer Edwin Diaz who provided the spark in 2022 getting hurt for the year right before the 2023 season, that meant way less excitement.
It definitely altered the mood and set the tone for the 2023 early part of the year.
The team did poorly last season and I’m not entirely blaming this on injuries such as Diaz’s season ending upset.
Guys that did well in 2022, such as Jeff McNeil simply didn’t come around in 2023. McNeil won the batting title in 2022, hitting 9 home runs, 62 RBIs batting .326 with a .382 OBP. He followed that up with 10 home runs, 55 RBIs batting .270 with a .333 OBP, going cold the majority of the season offensively.
Some players just didn’t bring their A game stuff, and it resulted in several trades at the trade deadline with stars such as Tommy Pham, Mark Canha and Justin Verlander sent packing.
Edwin Diaz is set to make his return from an ACL tear this coming 2024 season. Hopefully Pete Alonso gets his mega deal, contract extension, because he’s given the organization 5 solid years.
I expect one player in particular to have an exceedingly great 2024.
Every year minus 2021, upon coming to the New York Mets, star shortstop Fransisco Lindor has impressed either quietly or put on a show. His 2022 was fantastic, he hit 26 home runs, 107 RBIs with a .270 batting average and a .339 OBP. He followed up that great year with an impressive 2023, winning the NL silver slugger award and hitting 31 home runs, 98 RBIs, batting .254 with a .336 OBP and having a 6.0 WAR (Wins above replacement) as well.
The trend with Lindor just keeps getting better, his stats only get better year after year.
Expect 2024 to be one of the highlight years Lindor has despite a negative outlook for the team as a whole standings wise and playoffs wise. Some guys will be sights for sore eyes making the team fun to watch and Lindor will be just that guy.
To put things into perspective, Lindor will contribute to the team mightily often however the final results show as otherwise so to say not enough. One player can’t fix the fast falling Mets, but look for him to make the game much more fun to watch as good things are in store for the star shortstop in the years to come.
