NY Mets: Team needs to take more aggressive approach this offseason

The 2023 New York Mets have really cut it close so far, missing out on not only one but two of baseballโ€™s biggest names this offseason. While former San Diego Padresโ€™ superstar Juan Soto was recently dealt to the Yankees and Shohei Ohtani signed a whopping $700 million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, itโ€™s reported that the Mets were never in on the Ohtani sweepstakes, being very passive and quiet after a big spending previous 2022 offseason.

MetsMadnessโ€™ very own Mikayla Scotlynd Rizzo gives her opinion and insight on this situation followed by Anthonyโ€™s take on the team.

Enter former Miami Marlinsโ€™ utility guy Joey Wendle, INF, who is 33 and not boasting much of a resume that speaks โ€œhungry to win.โ€

In 2023, a -0.2 WAR, 2 home runs, 20 RBIs, and a .212 batting average.

Thatโ€™s laughable or simply a cry for help on the front officeโ€™s part both.

If you think thatโ€™s funny, the next joke is even funnier.

The team thought theyโ€™d break the internet by signing former New York Yankees SP Luis Severino, who has dealt with a ton of injuries, last being shelved in 2023 for the remainder of the season dealing with a high grade oblique strain.

Wait. Thatโ€™s not it! It gets better.

Severino went 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA in 2023, in 2022 he went 7-3 in 19 GP as well with a 3.18 ERA and is a proud owner of a 3.79 career ERA.

Thatโ€™s pathetic.

Hey, at least the team went out and got Michael Tonkin:

Tonkin, SP, is 34 years old, went 7-3 with a 4.28 ERA in 80 IP, with 75 strikeouts.

The team likely wonโ€™t get Yoshinobu Yamamoto or anyone else of high regard due to the fact that the Mets and billionaire owner Steve Cohen appear to be on DND while everyone else is making moves to become a contender again.

Some things never change.

Now I hand things off to Anthony for his recap on the Mets.

New York Mets Pursue Yoshinobu Yamamoto could be Signed by Monday:

The New York Mets are generating buzz with their active pursuit of Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Recent reports reveal that Mets owner Steve Cohen and General Manager David Stearns embarked on a journey to Japan to personally meet with Yamamoto, emphasizing the team’s appeal. Mets fans are going to be happy this christmas. The Mets are clearly enthusiastic about securing the services of this talented pitcher, with talks hinting at a potential contract surpassing the initial estimate of $250 million.

Yamamoto’s impending free agency has become a central focus for the Mets, particularly following a subdued Winter Meetings period. Despite the challenges presented by a stagnant free-agent market, the Mets exhibit unwavering determination to make a significant acquisition in the form of Yamamoto. Notably, the team has already made moves to bolster its pitching staff by signing Jorge Lรณpez to a one-year, $2 million deal.

The decision regarding Yamamoto’s move is eagerly anticipated, and the unfolding negotiations will shape the Mets’ roster for the upcoming seasons. Under Cohen’s leadership, the Mets are positioned to make a substantial impact during the offseason, strategically adding a prized pitcher to their lineup. Fans and analysts are closely monitoring these developments, eagerly anticipating the potential positive influence Yamamoto could have on the Mets’ performance in the years to come.
