The 2024 fourth place 25-35 .407 New York Mets are finally playing heads up baseball. Sort of. The team is playing the Washington Nationals and several players such as Harrison Bader and Fransisco Lindor are really hitting the ball hard. It stinks to let stars go. Either way, it has to be done. Hereโs one player likely to not be around after the trade deadline
Pete Alonso is probably the most obvious choice on this current roster. Alonsoโs struggles are becoming more evident, and prominent, both.
The three time All-Star and two time Home Run Derby Champion isnโt exactly off to the hottest start this year.
This season, Alonso has hit 13 home runs with 30 batted in. Heโs put up a 0.7 WAR, and is batting .239 with a .313 OBP.
Thatโs despicable.
While Alonso retains high value in a potential trade, the team is likely to get a few highly touted prospects, perhaps 3. All should be of good use for the future of the team, which seems to be much younger by the year. Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio and Fransisco Alvarez are all key components and so is Mark Vientos.
Alonso displays a power bat but lacks the leadership. Itโs best to part ways and build from scratch.

I wonder what they realistically are willing to take back for Pete.
