The 2024 New York Mets are in 3rd place with a 53-48 record at the end of July. This is not a drill. They are in the 3rd wild card as well, meaning there’s a legitimate shot at making the playoffs thus far.
One thing remains certain, there were players who started off absolutely dreadful offensively then came out of nowhere to redeem themselves.
Here’s the top 3 who fit this description. Only one will be named player of the month of July.
3. Pete Alonso, 1B
“Why Pete?,” one may ask. In fact, there is a very valid argument as to why he’s made this list.
Alonso, 29, started off rather ice cold after projected to have a monstrous start to 2024 since deciding to “bet on himself.”
He was projected to start off with a bang, as he’s given the team 6 years of pure grit, talent, and overall excellent leadership.
Alonso’s performance in the 2024 home run derby was merely suggesting he’s cooled off significantly.
This season so far, Alonso has a 1.1 WAR, having hit 19 home runs, 51 RBIs, batting .244 with a .323 OBP.
That’s called a lackluster season so far for a player of Alonso’s caliber. He’s allowed to have this kind of a season, I’m just saying, he’s began to pick up pace only just recently after starting out ice cold.
2. Jeff McNeil, 2B.
Everyone’s “favorite” to be traded away at the deadline. Many Mets fans were convinced this man had zero fight in him and he had nothing left to offer the team, and guess what? I was also one of those people.
As per my article See here.
He’s gone off offensively on a tear. In his last 5 games, McNeil has hit 2 home runs and 3 RBIs, although he’s still got a 0.4 WAR, that should tell you how pathetic his season has been all year long.
3. Fransisco Lindor, SS.
Lindor is a leader and a class act, sometimes, he fails to start off strong. Similar to 2021, he’s had a tough April, perhaps May, but June, oh he turned it around quickly.
So only one guy can be named player of the month of July.
Is it really fair to nominate based off a small sample size? I could say, he’s done better this month than he has all year. Congratulations Jeff McNeil, your hard work is starting to pay off. You have shown the Mets that you deserve to be on the team in the long run, the team shouldn’t become sellers at the deadline.
This is my decision on player of the month of July, Mets baseball.
