The 2026 New York Mets are playing putrid, horrible, way below average baseball. With a firm stance in last place, the team cannot seem to score runs, produce high value moments or win streaks, or simply accomplish anything at all. Here’s why I personally dont see the team contending before the next five years, possibly this next decade.
The team lost its core in first baseman Pete Alonso when Alonso was not offered a contract this past offseason. They also lost a valued closer in Edwin Diaz, who went on to join the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While the Alonso/Diaz loss combination represents a small fraction of significant loss, the main reasons the team likely will not reach contention is the mere fact that ownership is incompetent at their roles.
David Stearns makes one bad deal after another, pushing an odd “analytics” standpoint that makes no sense in today’s game. His numbers dont add up, the players he wants dont deliver, and this formula is one that adds up to let down after let down.
The Mets reassured Stearns that his job is safe, which means years of disastrous choices to come. There seems to be no end in sight, and billionaire owner Steve Cohen simply cannot buy his way into 3rd place, which is laughable.
Money does not buy happiness, look at the Mets. Nobody is happy there. Talent is going to waste, and stars are seeing their talent dimished by the dark cloud that remains both a losing season plus management.
Give it fifteen years before Cohen sells the team. Who knows what will happen. I have an idea that Cohen overspent on Soto and his casino, and there is always a price to pay for impuslivity. Cohen will eventually be unable to pay his players if this below poor performance keeps up.
Fifteen years, that seems like ann eternity, Mets fans. I hope you have Netflix or something else to watch besides this joke of a team

All I want is a competitive team that plays up to its potential. Start by selling off every player Stearns brought in. The guys who came through the system are decent. The free agents are a pack of bums. And get rid of Stearns before he does anymore damage.
