The 2023 last place, 60-72, .455 New York Mets have had quite the tumultuous season so far. While the team is playing downright awful of late, there’s one name who didn’t disappoint this month, heavily contributing to the team. Let’s take a look.
When being needy for offensive production late in games is the sad reality of the team, someone could easily step up and play hero. One guy did just that this August.
Right fielder DJ Stewart has been in the majors 6 years total, and in his first year in Queens, he’s done a phenomenal job. So far in 82 at bats, he’s got 7 home runs, 14 RBIs, and has a .268 OBP with a .936 OPS.
That’s remarkable.
In his 6 year career altogether, he’s hit 33 home runs, 87 RBIs, and has a .220 batting average.
His career best year was with the Baltimore Orioles in 2021, where he played in 100 games hitting 12 home runs, 33 RBIs and batted .204.
While it’s evident that Stewart has been the bat the Mets have been relying on and a huge source of power and run production thus far, he rightfully deserves the title of player of the month of August.
To put things into perspective, it’s important to recognize who is responsible for helping an organization and making them better when all looks bleak. While there’s a ton of work still left to do, you have to give credit to Stewart and his hot bat as of lately and respect what he’s giving this team. A team just trying to gain some ground and recover a season that appeared completely out of reach.
