NY Mets: Team Signing Reliever Andre Scrubb risky yet beneficial

In case you haven’t heard, the New York Mets recently signed former Houston Astros star reliever Andre Scrubb, 28, to a minor league deal. The right hander has had his unfortunate share of injuries over the years. Here’s a closer look at the details surrounding Scrubb and what it means for the team.

Scrubb was lights out dominant in 2020, where he led the Astros bullpen with 23 2/3 innings pitched with a 1.90 ERA.

Sadly, the good times didn’t last long, when Scrubb was diagnosed with a shoulder strain that shelved him for some of 2021, when he only pitched 19 2/3 innings, missing nearly all of 2022 as a result of the injury.

Being that 2021 was Scrubb’s last MLB appearance, it’s certainly a gamble that team President of baseball operations David Stearns has taken, despite the fact that Scrubbs did surprisingly well in the Puerto Rico winter league, where he put up a solid 1.35 ERA in 13 innings.

His return to MLB will not be easy, and coming back from a significant injury is never a task to be taken lightly. It requires a ton of conditioning and the Mets have been known to give guys a chance, signing players who have dealt with significant injuries and time lost, hence the signing recently of SP Luis Severino.

While the risk remains whether Scrubb can redeem himself in 2024, and stay healthy, the positive side of this is that he’s 28 years old, and still has years to get back to the reliever he was in 2020.

The team understandably took a chance on Scrubb, and his age and a recent outing is definitely in his and the Mets’ favor right now. Time will tell, hopefully Scrubb can pan out and be what the team expects.
