NY Mets: Offseason Priority is Most Definitely Pete Alonso

The 2024 third place New York Mets are 1.5 games back in the Wild Card race. It’s evident that by not shopping star first baseman Pete Alonso, 29, they expect to contend this season. Here’s why re-signing Alonso is a must get done during the 2024-25 offseason.

Alonso is a power hitter who can easily change the game with one swing. When he’s healthy and consistent, which is the majority of the season, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Alonso has given the Mets six years of pure talent, hard work, leadership and ethic.

He is the 2019 NL Rookie of The Year award winner, a 3x NL All-Star, and a 2x Home Run Derby Champion.

In 2022, Alonso hit 40 home runs, 131 RBIs, batting .271 with a .352 OBP.

In his rookie year, Alonso hit 53 home runs and 120 RBIs, batting .260 with a .358 OBP.

This season, Alonso has a 1.9 WAR, having hit 23 home runs, 59 RBIs, batting .242 with a .328 OBP.

A player of Alonso’s caliber with the leadership he possesses is not often available. Alonso reportedly would hope to stay in New York, and if the Mets can’t see that he fits well in their long term plans at first base, they need to.

Alonso brings the leadership that younger players such as Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and Fransisco Alvarez can look up to.

The price should be right for the star first baseman. If Scott Boras and Alonso, the team can agree on the years, Cohen should pay Alonso what he deserves.

Alonso deserves to be a Met for life. At one point it made sense to trade him. The dynamics have shifted, and we’ve got ourselves a team. It’s now time to sign him.
