NY Mets: Juan Soto Signing The Best In Decades Yet Still Poses Potential Risks

The 2025 New York Mets will see a huge upgrade offensively. In case you haven’t heard, former New York Yankees and Washington Nationals superstar Juan Soto signed a 15 year, $765 million dollar deal with the team this offseason. While the news shocked baseball fans and executives alike, here’s some things to consider, such as the awesome things the Mets will see and the risks involved.

Juan Soto, 26, is arguably one of baseball’s best players.

In 2024 alone, he posted up a 7.4 WAR with the New York Yankees, hitting 41 home runs and driving in 109 runs atop a .288 batting average and .419 OBP.

He is also credited to major successes with the Washington in both 2021 and 2022.

In 2021 he hit 29 home runs, 95 RBIs, batting .313 with a .465 OBP.

He followed that year up by hitting 27 home runs and 92 RBIs, batting .242 with a .401 OBP the next.

What’s amazing is all these remarkable seasons with so much left in his already highly appraised career.

Now as most people should understand, with rewards obviously come risks.

One of the concerns the teams should obviously consider remains Soto’s average (to put it respectfully) defensive capabilities.

Soto can have slight issues in right field from time to time, and defense can highly be a factor in the outcome of a close game, or Amy game the team plays in general.

Every play counts, and a concern is certainly his defense. That is one risk the team obviously was aware of when they inked Soto to the deal.

The other concern remains his demands and clubhouse mentality. Many players are hard working and deserve so much respect, but is the amount of money not enough, that a family suite has to be also a must? I do respect Stoo making sure his family is cared for. You just have to consider what else he may ask for down the line or in the clubhouse that could throw off the team chemistry or foundation completely.

That being said, there’s obviously a lot going on in Queens, and the majority of it seems to have the positive outweighing the negatives.

Money is not the issue for billionaire owner Steve Cohen. The issue remains the quality of play on the field and the integrity off of it.

This deal obviously poses potential long term risks and some early questions yet it is overall highly regarded as the best in decades.
