The 2024 New York Mets have seen many talented guys better their careers. From Shortstop Fransisco Lindor, 31, entering himself in yet another MVP conversation to SP Sean Manaea showing the team good results, itโs clear that the future looks bright. Hereโs one particular name that may possibly breakout on that spectacular level in 2025.
The third base platoon composed of Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio and Mark Vientos was interesting to say the least. While Baty was the one with the highest expectations upon him, and Mauricio having been sidelined all 2024 after getting hurt in winter ball, there left one obvious choice for the team in need.
To say that Vientos, 25, has done his job well would be an understatement. The fact of the matter remains that out of the three 3B on the depth chart, Vientos has proven to be the best choice.
Baty had struggled defensively, and his rookie season was awful, to put it mildly. He tried to bounce back the following season yet came up short in regards to his offensive capabilities.
Vientos shined bright, and at one point he seemed โthe odd man outโ once JD Martinez was inked.
However hopeful fans were about Martinez, Martinez simply was underwhelming.
Vientos dazzled in 2024. He hit 27 home runs and drove in 71, batting .266 with a .322 OBP.
I think a trend as far as upwards will happen simply because of his age and the progress heโs made offensively and defensively.
When Vientos has some help in the lineup around him, he is more than capable of doing big things. As Iโve mentioned here, if you click on that, you can see the hype surrounding Vientos is statistically accurate and backed by logic.
Itโs evident that developing a team of younger players is essential for success and playoff contention potential.
I strongly believe that Vientos has not only earned his starting 3B job out of the others, but heโs also going to have such a key role if he sticks around long term. The hot corner has been deprived of a high quality big name talent since the unfortunate retirement of captain and fan favorite David Wright. In retrospect, Vientos has what it takes to become a fan favorite as well. There may be a possibility that he wonโt end up with that same long term success or respect, but for now, I believe his potential is very high. I expect him to follow up 2024 with a very remarkable 2025.
