NY Mets Must Not Trade Mark Vientos

The 2025 New York Mets are in a somewhat comfortable position in the NL East. Being in 1st place with a 62-44 record, much of the teamโ€™s early on accomplishments came from the youth on the team. With guys like Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez, and notably Mark Vientos, thereโ€™s upsides to all. With rumors of Vientos, 25, possibly being sent out of New York, hereโ€™s why it is crucial that he isnโ€™t traded.

One can argue that there is a โ€œbestโ€ candidate or player out of all 3, without even mentioning SS/3B Ronny Mauricio. They would be correct.

Catcher Francisco Alvarez has displayed solid numbers in his sophomore season, and while heโ€™s gone on quite an offensive tear since being called up from injury, his teammate Brett Baty has also tried to prove that he belongs on the team and can hold it down at third base.

Which therefore leaves Vientos โ€œthe potential trading piece.โ€

I strongly believe that Baty is not consistent enough to handle the job daily as the teamโ€™s starting third baseman.

Batyโ€™s stats this year are as follows, 11 home runs, 33 RBI, batting .235.

Last year he was worse, having hit 4 home runs and 16 RBI.

His rookie season was dreadful. Baty displayed defensive mishaps quite often, and was even sent down to Triple A more than once.

As far as Vientos, Vientos was a huge factor in the teamโ€™s playoff push last season.

Last year, he hit 27 home runs with 71 RBI.

In just his sophomore year.

I personally think that trading Vientos would be a huge mistake if youโ€™re concerned about the โ€œfuture of the infield.โ€

The team is literally watching them develop right now. Why would you trade Vientos, when the goal was to get younger and build homegrown talent? Why throw that away?

It would be a harsh and irrational move on the teamโ€™s part.

Sure, Vientos is quite underwhelming this season, but if you look at this from a statistical and logical standpoint, Vientos can have a breakout season within the next 2-3 years.

If anyone would be considered or offered as โ€œtrade bait,โ€ it should certainly be Baty.

Baty isnโ€™t terrible, but he has the potential to develop his skills on a team where his position isnโ€™t in a competition. If you look at it this way, thereโ€™s 2 other candidates who can play third. LuisAngel Acuna, and also, Ronny Mauricio.

It makes sense to keep the best players while managing them effectively and using them where they can grow.

Baty seems like a potentially good 3rd baseman with the proper environment to thrive in. I think the return for Baty might be significant, and it would be irrational to trade Vientos.
