The 2026 .411 37-53 last place New York Mets have an odd situation in the world of MLB. While their 765 million dollar man Juan Soto, 27, RF, is producing at a significant level, several of his All Star counterparts are performing below subpar. Hereโs 3 takeaways from this season so far.
- Brett Baty is simply a headache.
His .218 batting average and 3 home runs sort of speaks for itself. That speaks volumes when you add the fact heโs never had a good season here in Queens, since he was drafted in 2019.
4 years is definitely patient. The team should not expect anything significant from Baty. In fact, itโs best to part ways. Surely he may play better elsewhere, but to the Mets, he brings and adds no value.
2. Luis Torrens is proving to be an underrated addition.
A skilled backstop with power and clutch potential, Torrens provides quality relief in substitution for Francisco Alvarez. I could even make the argument that trading Alvarez and keeping Torrens would be a move that not only brings in a quality player but benefits the team, because Alvarez is sometimes injured a good deal. Torrens is only seeing a decline in production numbers due to being a backup.
Given the every day role, not only would his confidence rise, his numbers would see a sharp uptick.
3. Kodai Senga will remain one of the most underwhelming deals of this decade.
If you thought 2010 Jason Bay was bad, Kodai Senga came knocking to ask if thereโs anything he couldnโt do. The 32 year old had one good season, and one only. Being shelved repeatedly over a span of 3 years is a sign that thereโs no more left in Senga to give this team. Even if he stays healthy, he is a shell of his old dominant self, sounding the alarm that he simply doesnโt have what it takes to succeed in MLB
This team spent almost a billion dollars in the previous offseason and still canโt get it right. Cursed is an understatement. Someone pissed off the Lord of the wins, and someone may have to pull a Joe Namath to redeem a championship. If you donโt get the joke, youโre not old enough to understand.
