The last place 2026 New York Mets have called up SP Kodai Senga, 32, replacing Christian Scott in the rotation. While Senga wowed during his first season in Queens, it was his only stellar or solid season with the team. From battling injuries, and below subpar performances and lackluster outings, here’s why Senga should be treated with a “Do your job or we have no use for you” approach
The team is solely responsible for the production on the field, on the mound, along with offensive results. The management and higher ups are in charge of getting the right dynamics and bringing in a hopefully “winning culture.”
What this means for the players is that they should be adhering to what the hitting and pitching coaches are discussing. Sure, mishaps happen. The fact that injuries happen is unfortunate, but one after another is simply hurting the team. The team relies heavily on all five starters, it has had a deep need for pitching for quite some time.
When one player isn’t doing their part, the other four now have to work even harder to overcompensate for what the slacking player is not doing.
I don’t need to bring up Senga’s first season stats, they’re irrelevant. The mere fact that he hasn’t stayed healthy in almost two years alone shows me that he’s on the verge of not being able to do his job at the major league level.
One significant season does not make someone capable of being an All-Star. It shouldn’t. There’s the solid test of overcoming the sophomore slump, whilst improving your repertoire of pitches. That in itself can prove challenging, and a vast minority of pitchers can last. Durable pitchers are a dying breed.
The good news for Senga is the fact that the team has seemingly a soft side for him. Opportunity after opportunity seems to be in his favor, but the fact of the matter is, he doesn’t seem capable of staying healthy.
If Senga can’t get the job done this time around, it should be the final time he’s allowed to “prove it.”
He’s showed the team that he’s struggling, and they’ve been more patient than they should have. It’s really that simple.
