NY Mets: Why A Cespedes Reunion Would Have Worked

The New York Mets have reportedly reached out to former Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes while the team was heavily plagued with injuries. Hereโ€™s why the move could have played out in the long run.

Cespedes had a historic 2015 season for the Mets where he hit 18 home runs and drove in 61 while batting .291 with a .328 OBP. His OPS was solid at .870, and his SLG was .542, making him a solid acquisition at first.

Little by little, Cespedes wore out his welcome in New York, and by the 2020 season, Cespedes was hurt more than three times, so bringing him back on a one year deal was sort of risky. The Mets went ahead and inked Cespedes to a one-year contract, however, he was being called to the ballpark and did not answer the phone, prompting team security to check on him. However, Cespedes was no where in sight, and later it was to the Mets shock that Cespedes had ultimately decided to opt out due to Covid-19 concerns.

What was unknown by the media is that Cespedes has a few high risk family members. Therefore, his concerns made the most sense given his situation. Could he have answered the phone? Of course. Yet, bringing back the guy 1/3 responsible for the 2015 World Series appearance would be welcomed if you truly wished to see the team even more successful in the grand scheme of things.

To say the least, Cespedes would have been a bonus, little risk, yet a solid addition. It remains to be seen what Cespedes decides to do ultimately.
