NY Mets: It’s time to move on from DH Daniel Vogelbach

The 2023 New York Mets have seen too much anguish and heartbreak when it comes to players simply not doing their job of scoring runs or contributing the way they were expected to. Here’s why the team should cut ties with one of their biggest underperformers this season so far.

Enter slumping Designated Hitter, Daniel Vogelbach. Vogelbach, 30, has been an utter disappointment, to put it nicely. This season so far, he’s got a -0.3 WAR, in 215 at bats he’s only managed to get 48 hits, has 8 home runs, 33 RBIs and a .223 batting average.

That’s a far cry from his best year in his so far 8 years in the majors, when he was with the Seattle Mariners. That standout year, he hit a whopping 30 home runs, 76 RBIs, and a .208 batting average.

He’s spent two years with the New York Mets, and they have not gone in the Mets’ and the DH’s favor exactly. Combining both years, and he’s managed 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, and batted .236. That’s not exactly great numbers for a power associated position at DH.

In 2022, his first season with the Mets, he’s hit 6 home runs, 25 RBIs and batted .255 on the season.

Although with his former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates and then after joining the Mets, he totaled for 18 home runs on the season, 59 RBIs and batted .238 on the year, respectively.

However it’s hard to part with guys that seem to have good power hitting here and there, it’s best to get a DH that’s routinely consistent and can get the job done in a tough spot when needed. Daniel Vogelbach is not that guy unfortunately and he’s been given more than enough opportunities to turn it around for a team who so desperately needs a power bat, especially in his role here with the franchise. It’s wise to assume his struggles would only continue as the team is not expected to be contending until roughly 2025 or 2026.

To sum it all up, Vogelbach has seen brighter days, and while he had semi big expectations he has not filled them even in the slightest while being given a ton of chances. It’s best to cut the losses and let him go, finding a DH that will put up better numbers consistently should not be that hard of a task.
