NY Mets: 3 What if Storylines that could unfold in 2024

The 2023 New York Mets have disappointed, to put things nicely, falling short of their huge expectations after a massive offseason haul. This falter had the team shipping star pitcher Justin Verlander back to Houston, and several other big name stars were sent packing as well at the trade deadline before ending the season in 4th place and utter despair.

This is why thereโ€™s a bunch of things, understandably so, that remain the first order of business for billionaire owner Steve Cohen this winter. From extending one of baseballโ€™s hottest hitters and a beloved among the Metsโ€™ faithful in Pete Alonso, to potentially landing a generational talent in free agent Shohei Ohtani, Cohen is working with a couple of billion to spend to make the 4th place Mets a runner up potentially in the NL East. While itโ€™s evident that the division isnโ€™t for the Metsโ€™ taking until approximately 2026, per team brass officials, the team could bolster the starting lineup with a few moves. Hereโ€™s one that could very well happen, the first one that comes to mind. Letโ€™s take a look.

Everyone loves a fresh face that brings positive change and life to the organization. Whatโ€™s to be said is when other teams drop the ball and let a good one slip away, it gives another team an opportunity to steal the spotlight and scoop up what they dropped.

Baseball Executive Kim Ng has done wonders for the Miami Marlins organization in her time spent, turning Miami into a playoff appearing team in 2023.

While her departure from the organization shocked the baseball world, it left fans hopeful that the same could be done for the Metsโ€™ organization if she were to listen to Cohen and co on a position. Who wouldnโ€™t like a game changer in Ng, especially a rarity, a woman in baseball? Ng has a credible resume to show for and would be an excellent fit under big spending Cohen. Working together would solidify and fix the huge issue that remains the front office.

Ng would love a flexible budget to work with, which Cohen could easily provide. Ng is a professional at turning a dumpster fire of a team into a potentially dangerous squad, hence last season in Miami. It would shake up the division if the Mets could steal one of baseballโ€™s top executives from a division rival, respectively.

If another thing is to be said, time is totally on one guy in particularโ€™s side and seemingly his career in New York just keeps getting better as the years go by, contrary to popular belief. The fans, well, the baseball knowing ones, totally recognize greatness, and the Debby downers will not take note of these accomplishments from star shortstop Fransisco Lindor. Hereโ€™s why a breakout year could be on the horizon.

Itโ€™s evident Lindor was robbed of the NL 2023 Gold Glove award, which went to a barely relevant and present Dansby Swanson.

Lindor had an epic 2023, hitting 31 home runs and 98 RBIs coupled with a .254 batting average and a .336 OBP.

Last season, Lindor quietly made it a great one for himself as well, hitting 26 home runs and 107 RBIs with a .270 batting average and a .339 OBP.

Lindor would totally love to silence the naysayers and I would love that so much for him as well. It makes total sense that Lindor breaks out next season, shutting the haters up for good.

Even better, everyone loves a plot twist. Plot twists are so unexpected and totally get a ton of attention.

Many people werenโ€™t happy with the Mets hiding Carlos Mendoza as their new skipper. However, Mendoza has 15 years worth of experience within the New York Yankees organization. Heโ€™s done a variety of jobs there. One of his jobs was with player development.

In case you havenโ€™t noticed, the Mets just got a ton younger at the trade deadline.

Mendoza was the end decision after primary desire Craig Counsel accepted a role within the Chicago Cubs organization.

15 years, with a team. That means, for 15 years, Mendoza was a valued employee who did his job well at various roles.

I say Mendoza also defies the odds and negative expectations, now that Iโ€™ve done more thinking, and develops these young guys the right way. Heโ€™s got the experience.

Manager of the year? Itโ€™s the Mets. I wouldnโ€™t say it couldnโ€™t happen.

Iโ€™m not saying this is happening. Iโ€™m saying, these 3 things are potentially moves that could shake up the baseball world and the team chemistry, sparking a potential push towards playoff contention sooner than expected.
