The New York Mets and 33 year old SP Julio Teherán have parted ways yesterday, when the team announced they had him Designated for Assignment after just one appearance for the team.
This could come as a shock or surprise to some, as they could potentially wonder why he wasn’t given a proper chance to prove he belongs in Queens. His start was rather infuriating to watch however, with his ERA up to 13.50 on the year with 4 ER and having given up up 6 hits.
The right-handed Teheran is not the starter the team should be relying on regardless- the team really needs better options. That ERA suggests something is up and it could only get worse with the season the Mets are projected to have this year.
Teheran is not the guy for the Mets. He could have been a few years back, when he was 3-4 years younger and had slightly more to offer the team in terms of pitching. Now, it’s just too little too late.
The Mets need a guy experience to get in on this rotation. I still believe someone like Trevor Bauer is that guy, however, the front office knows way more about his legal situation than the fans do. Not much is known about that right at this moment, as Bauer, 33, has still not been found guilty of a crime.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto was on the team’s radar this offseason yet he’s gone to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If the Mets play their cards right, with the Ohtani interpreter drama having sizzled out this season, Ohtani could opt out potentially and be a candidate for the 2025 Mets.
The answer is just, simply, not Julio Teherán. It never was this season to begin with.
