The 2024 3rd place, 13-13 .500 New York Mets have potentially a huge storyline leading up to 2025. Star slugger first baseman Pete Alonso, 29, has put the wheels on full display as of late. Letโs take a closer look.
Recently, in a game played against the St. Louis Cardinals, Alonso hit his 200th career home run. The score was 6-2 Cardinals, and Alonsoโs 2 run blast was the trending topic although the Mets fell at the hands of their once nemesis from the NL Central.
Alonso is perhaps pulling the same move New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge did back when he signed to his respective $360 million dollar deal back in 2022.
Whatโs to be aforementioned is that Judge bet on himself that year and hit 62 home runs, breaking Roger Marisโ historic record set previously.
Alonso has had quite a respectable 5 year Mets tenure thus far. He made his debut in 2019 where he won NL East Rookie of the Year. Heโs a 3 time All-Star and a two time Home Run Derby title winner.
Alonso is going into his 2024 with a bang. Heโs hit 7 home runs, 12 RBIs, batting .253 with a .327 OBP.
So far, Alonso deserves whatever heโs asking for. A player of Alonsoโs caliber at first base with grade A quality defense isnโt often available although many first baseman typically can display power.
Itโs wise the team slaps the C on that manโs chest and locks him up long term. He continues to earn it.
