NY Mets: The Best Offseason Approach Explained

The 2024 fourth place New York Mets have had quite a tumultuous season so far. Between starting off slow, then picking up the pace, most recently winning 7 games in a row. Hereโ€™s a look at whatโ€™s to come this season and the best approach for the 2024-25 offseason.

The team is expected to shop First Baseman Pete Alonso, 29, at the trade deadline, along with 2B Jeff McNeil, DH JD Martinez, and more.

Alonso is a three time All Star, 2019 National League Rookie of the Year award winner, and a two time Home Run Derby champion.

JD Martinez, 36, signed a one year, $12 million dollar deal this previous offseason.

McNeil, 32, has been nothing short of abysmal since his one magical year in which he won the 2022 NL batting title.

This year, heโ€™s got a -0.5 WAR, 3 home runs, 15 RBIs, batting .212 with a .278 OBP.

The best approach during the deadline is to trade away everything, everyone, including Fransisco Lindor.

The best offseason approach would be to ride out the rough year by focusing on developing home grown talent and getting the core younger guys ready to take on the roles of leading a franchise. Itโ€™s going to take years before the Mets make the playoffs, but avoiding big name guys such as Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani, who could potentially opt out, will be helpful.
