The third place 41-41 .500 New York Mets have put the wheels on full display this previous month of June. Between winning 7 games in a row, being 8-2 in 10 games, and also climbing out of fourth place in the NL East, many players have been redeeming themselves. Hereโs one player I personally feel will lead the team and be crowned Julyโs player of the month for Mets baseball, my monthly personal pick.
The team has seen the emergence of young stars such as Catcher Fransisco Alvarez, 22, and third baseman Brett Baty, 24. Although Baty has struggled heavily and is seemingly tearing it up down in Syracuse, Alvarez has shined bright at the major league level.
This season alone, Alvarez has a 1.2 WAR, with 4 home runs, 23 RBI, batting .306 with a .372 OBP.
However, the trade deadline is approaching, and itโs a given that the young star isnโt going anywhere.
One man might, and heโs given the Mets 6 years of pure talent and uttermost class. It makes sense that this particular player would go on a tear this month to avoid being traded away.
Pete Alonso, 29, is a two time Home Run Derby Champion, a 3x National League All Star, and the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year award winner.
Alonso has been redeeming himself as of lately. This season so far, heโs got a 1.0 WAR, having hit 17 home runs, 46 RBIs, batting .244 with a .331 OBP.
His splits for the month of June are just as great.
Heโs hit 5 home runs, 19 RBIs, batting .272 with a .387 OBP this June alone.
Heโs going to have a great July with unfinished business left on his agenda.
Alonso decided to test free agency and bet on himself. Heโd love to stay a Met, however, he wants his moneyโs worth being a Scott Boras client. His top potential landing spots remain the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees.
Alonso most likely will go on a tear and plead his case to stay with the organization that developed him. Only time will tell more.
