NY Mets: A Letter To Mets Owner Steve Cohen

Fairwarning. What you are about to read is heartfelt, and me pouring out my heart and soul in a letter hoping that team owner Steve Cohen will do the right thing and make star First Baseman Pete Alonso a Met for life.

Dear Steve Cohen,

First off I want to say I understand that you are putting the best interest of the team, the New York Mets, and their needs first. I understand that and I know the first order of business is to think about the company. The franchise.

I wanted just to share how Iโ€™ve grown to know and love Alonso for being our first baseman for these past six years. I wanted to share what it meant for me personally watching him, me being the avid Mets fan that looked forward to games and how the weight of him possibly not returning next season has impacted me drastically.

I didnโ€™t know myself if Iโ€™d ever have a favorite Mets player again after Javy Baez left Queens. I swore Iโ€™d stop doing that โ€œnonsenseโ€ and root for the team on the front not the players on the back at all. I swore I would not play favorites or look up to any of them the way they play or lead on and off the field with class and dignity, but here we are again.

It wasnโ€™t til 2023 when it really sank in that Alonso was much unlike any other first baseman Iโ€™ve seen play. Sure, power hitting 1B couldnโ€™t be too hard to find in todayโ€™s market.

Have you personally seen his passion and enthusiasm for the Home Run Derby and the All-Star game?

I have. Iโ€™ve seen the image plastered across my tv screen, Alonso, sitting in silence, focused, determined to win it all.

An expression of do or die is seen on his face.

The way Alonso loves this game and treats the other players in the clubhouse is much unlike any other simply playing for the money, like guys such as Anthony Rendon.

When I think of the Mets, I think of Alonso. I see the polar bear. I see someone who wants to be here and play for this team. I see someone who loves the fans like me.

Javy Baez didnโ€™t care about us. Understandably, I was upset when he left. Now? The gaping hole that was in my heart is filled with love that is given to us by players like Alonso.

โ€œHey Mets fans, itโ€™s Pete Alonso, come out to Citi Field to watch the New York Mets..โ€

If I donโ€™t hear this commercial again, Iโ€™ll have another gaping hole in my heart. Iโ€™ll have had yet another player Iโ€™ve looked up to and cherished just gone, all those happy memories gone.

Why watch? Why care if we canโ€™t lock up our guys long term? Why bother to get close to them and appreciate what they do for us if theyโ€™re just going to be not a part of the teamโ€™s future long term?

Simply put, Alonso deserves to be a Met for life.

Please consider the fans. Iโ€™m broken at the possibility that Iโ€™m afraid to watch the games and get close if heโ€™s just going to go elsewhere.

Pay him his money. Alonso has given us EVERYTHING. We love him.

Thanks.

Sincerely, a sad, scared, and worried Mets fan.
