The 2025 second place, 63-51 New York Mets have the pieces to make a playoff push, but several components of the infield are not meeting expectations. From defensive mishaps to offensive woes, here is why one Mets participant in particular should be designated for assignment simply to preserve the winning culture and make a point.
Third baseman Brett Baty, 25, has not only been a proven defensive liability yet his offensive capabilities have been downright awful too. From having a 1.6 WAR, hitting just 11 home runs and 35 RBI, batting .230 with a .404 OPS, he was even worse previously.
In 2024 he managed just 4 home runs and 16 RBI.
From simply not panning out how the team hoped, to the Mets having better options defensively such as Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio, it simply makes sense that the team stands on business and makes a bold statement, proving that it is crucial to play at a professional level and while there is room for mishaps, they shouldnโt be consistent.
To put things into perspective, the team really is struggling with Baty defending the hot corner. While possible, the team should simply send Baty down and not waste the other suitorsโ futures by starting someone not capable of doing the job.
