NY Mets: Projected Breakout Candidate For The Month of May

The fourth place 15-15, .500 New York Mets have had quite the roller coaster season thus far. The team had stars such as Luis Severino and Pete Alonso shine bright. Thereโ€™s a few players that come to mind when you think of whatโ€™s in store for the month of May. Hereโ€™s more to ponder.

When you consider the best candidate for a breakout month, you have a few factors that must be in the equation.

First, they must have something to prove. Second, their impact hasnโ€™t fully been made yet, granted this fits the description of what youโ€™re trying to narrate.

Third, they have to be young and upcoming.

Mark Vientos, 24, is quite frankly 2/3 of that.

After hitting a walk off blast to win the game for host New York recently, the team sent him back down to Triple A, raising eyebrows skeptically.

For good reason, though, as Vientos was just beginning to heat up.

In 7 at bats, Vientos has 1 home run, 2 RBIs, and is batting a whopping .429 with a .429 OBP.

Yet, he was sent back down.

The 3B/DH was at one point the odd man out in the teamโ€™s lineup as primary DH JD Martinez is presumably going to take his spot.

This is something I was once very for and now Iโ€™m very against. Itโ€™s conflicting to say the least.

Martinez, 36, was in the starting lineup against the Chicago cubs in last nightโ€™s game. With a key double in his Metsโ€™ debut, this is what made me conflicted. Both Vientos and Martinez are solid options for the DH position.

I expect Martinez to have a good portion of the month of May, but not for too long before Vientos is given another shot. Vientos is the future. If the team isnโ€™t going to part ways, his breakout season is up ahead. Heโ€™s going to make some noise in Syracuse and plead his case.

I truly believe Vientos is the future DH of the team. Martinez is what I like to call a bridge player, until Vientos is ready to hold down that job every day.

Itโ€™s worth keeping an eye on.
