The 2024 fourth place, 31-37 New York Mets are 15.5 games back yet viewing a possible comeback up ahead. With star Closer Edwin Diaz looking Sharp coming back from the injured list, and a recent walk off win blast by DH JD Martinez, hereโs more.
The team has certainly fallen deep into the cracks, with several Mets underperforming at various roles within the organization. Jeff McNeil, 2B, has been an uttermost disappointment. McNeil, who has 3 home runs, 14 RBI, a .223 batting average and a WAR of -0.2, is a shell of his old self who won the batting title in 2022.
Slugger Pete Alonso, 29, also has seen a few career lows. Alonso has decided to test free agency, and heโs simply not making a good name for himself with an 0.9 WAR, 14 home runs, 32 RBI, a .233 batting average and a .315 OBP.
Alonso reportedly turning down a 7 year $155 million dollar deal from the Mets this season is absolutely absurd.
But the Mets winning 9 of their last 13 games suggests that although the team is in 4th place, they could sneak past the ice cold Atlanta Braves and battle the first place Philadelphia Phillies well enough.
The rookies are going to be fun to watch, with Fransisco Alvarez and Brett Baty proving hopeful.
While the team realistically may not make the playoffs the outcome still could be good for the Mets. Stay tuned.

Actually, if you look at the standings, you will see that The Mets are only 3 games out of a wild card spot. And considering how poorly they have played, I think you can still think that they could be a playoff team. Don’t give up hope.
