The 2024 New York Mets are in third place with a 67-62 record. They are 1.5 games back in the wild card race, meaning they are right up there as far as the playoffs are concerned. Hereโs 3 Mets who are going above and beyond, exceeding expectations lately.
When players step up after having rough starts to the season, and furthermore enter themselves into the MVP conversation, that is something you donโt see daily, or quite often.
Thereโs also something to be said about players who start off cold while having somewhat of a โchip on their shoulder.โ while being a sophomore player, and then exceeding expectations. These are just two examples of what and who Iโll be explaining to everyone is just so special on this Mets team.
1. Mark Vientos, 3B Enter Mark Vientos, 24. Vientos struggled the better half or majority of 2023, making it necessary for the team to sign star DH JD Martinez, 37, to a one year deal.
So far this season, Vientos has a 2.7 WAR, having hit 20 home runs, 54 RBIs, batting .334 with a .549 OBP.
Thatโs insane growth potential.
Vientosโ hot bat has led the team far and he deserves a ton of recognition for starting the odd man out and proving his worth when he was deemed โlikely to be dealt.โ
The sky is the limit for this young DH/3B.
2. Pete Alonso, 1B.
This is no shocker. Alonso, 29, is entering his 6th season in MLB, and itโs his walk year in his contract. Some folks donโt want Alonso back because they feel a power hitting 1B is not a rare commodity in todayโs market, but in fact, his work ethic, leadership and drive simply speaks volumes. Not only is he a 4x All Star, a 2 time home run derby champion, and the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year award winner, heโs a man who the younger guys on the team respect and gravitate to.
A 2.3 WAR after starting out cool is awesome in my book. Heโs done a phenomenal job as of late, turning around his year and staying hot in August offensively and getting the job done defensively.
3. Fransisco Lindor, SS.
I simply cannot express into words how genuine of a player Lindor is. Heโs real. He doesnโt give up when the odds are against him and when the going gets tough. While many of these โMets fansโ belittle and ridicule this man, I ask myself, how can you hate this guy?
Lindor started off cool in 2021, his first year in Queens. The fanbase grew irate.
The seasons Lindor followed up with? They all showed 2019 in Cleveland vibes are on the horizon.
Lindor had most certainly wowed in 2023. He hit 38 home runs and drove in 98 runs.
Well this season, after starting off cold, heโs now got a 5.8 WAR, having hit 25 home runs and 73 RBIs so far.
Lindor is a player of his word. He brings smiles and positive energy when he takes the field. Heโs simply a true pleasure to watch and call my shortstop.
Stay tuned for my decision on NY Mets: Player of the Month of August.
