NY Mets: Announcing my Decision on Player of Month of April, Catcher Luis Torrens

The first place 2025 New York Mets have undeniably done everything right. As of yesterday, the team is still solid, with a 18-7 record, being .720 and 8-2 in their last ten games. What seems like a month where everyone is doing more than their share of work, one player has stood out the most. It’s not who you think it is.

While young and promising catcher Fransisco Alvarez, 23, was shelved due to injury the majority of the season thus far, backup catcher Luis Torrens, 28, signed in 2024, has stepped up big time. He contributed both offensively and defensively, with a 0.3 WAR, having hit a home run and 8 RBI, batting .241.

Behind the plate, Torrens showcased his dynamic ability to throw runners out on the basepaths and well above average framing and defense.

Now, I know for sure everyone is going “BUT PETE!?”

Lindor?

Listen, I get it. The values that I align well with are when you have a huge job to do and you’re not exactly expected to come in clutch but you do? That tells me everything I need to know about you. Pete, Lindor, well we knew they were gonna have a great month. It’s easily expected.

Playing in New York isn’t easy. Doing someone else’s job on a team with very high expectations is also very difficult.

I applaud Torrens for stepping up when needed, and now that Alvarez is back, I wouldn’t expect to see much of Torrens.

The morale of the story is, he really came through when needed badly. In fact, he did such a spectacular job that Mets didn’t need post “we miss Alvarez.”

He held it down, stepped up and made his argument to be kept on this team. Whether it’s as backup catcher, or whatever, Torrens has earned my nod for April’s player of the month, Mets baseball.

This is a job well done, Torrens. Thank you!
