The first place, 24-14 .632 New York Mets have been very successful thus far, most notably in the month of April. While this is no surprise, as April tends to be the teamโs arguably best month, some players have stayed consistent well into mid May. Hereโs why star First Baseman Pete Alonso deserves a longtime contract.
Alonso, 30, has a 2.3 WAR this season, having hit 9 home runs and 34 RBI, batting .328.
In his rookie season, in which he won the rookie of the year award, he hit a whopping 53 home runs, 120 RBI, batting .260 with a .358 OBP.
His 2022 and 2023 were solid, making the argument that he deserved to be kept around.
In 2024, he also did well, hitting 34 home runs, 88 RBI, batting .240.
While Alonso and the Mets were far apart on contract negotiations after his free agency bet on himself season, the team inked Alonso eventually for 2 years, $54 million dollars.
The team has undeniably underpaid for Alonso, who clearly proved he wants to remain in New York and also deserves more than heโs getting currently.
The team inked Juan Soto, 26, to a 15 year, $765 million dollar deal this winter.
My opinion is, Steve Cohen, team owner, got fleeced in the deal. His pure pride would not allow that a second time, prompting him to tread cautiously with Alonso.
Alonso has been with the team his entire career. There is no given reason he shouldnโt be here long term. His breakout season would be formidable and is expected to be within now to next year, statistically speaking.
The only correct thing to do after this season, if the team can, is make things right with Alonso. Heโs proven his loyalty and his worth. Thatโs very generous of him.
