The second place, 30-20 .600 New York Mets started off with a bang in April, when they became the first team to twenty wins. They held their own in first place, but as usual, it was in the month of April, when the team always florishes. Here is one player who has kept up in May, when everything seemed to have cooled down as per usual.
For me speaking personally, I love a player with a chip on their shoulder. I love the guys who someone doubted, let go, and it comes back to haunt their former team. No I am not also talking about Travis d’Arnaud, because that wound still hasn’t healed!
I’m talking about Mets SP Griffin Canning, 5-1, 1.6 WAR, 2.47 ERA.
The Atlanta Braves traded for him then let him in the offseason, never giving him an opportunity to shine.
That truly resonates with myself. I too play ball, for slow pitch softball leagues. Pitches be trippin kicked me off the team because of my weight. Yes, I was slightly overweight and couldn’t run to first base fast enough.
Guess who lost 15 pounds and now runs super fast? I am playing rec league soccer and I run very fast (a notable improvement) and guess who is in my DMs looking for their RF back?
Canning displays a well strategized approach to striking batters out atop excellent control over a solid array of pitches, an above average fastball.
Congratulations, Griffins Canning. You have shown an ability to adjust to Queens, all while reinventing yourself.
You deserve to be POTM of the month of May.
