The 2024 fourth place, 21-28 .429 New York Mets have hit an all time low. Changes must be made before they outlow the Miami Marlins and claim last place, a very difficult feat but a possible one.
Alonso, 29, has been off to a rather hot and cold start to the season. The star first baseman, who is a 3 time All-Star and a two time Home Run Derby champion, has disappointed in half of May.
Alonso so far has hit 11 home runs, 24 RBIs, with a .236 batting average and a .313 OBP.
It’s safe to assume he hasn’t provided the spark that the team is looking for early on. Whether or not he picks up the pace will say more as far as contract negotiations are concerned, as Alonso has decided to test Free Agency during the the 2023-24 off-season.
Trading and parting ways with the slugger means retaining high value in the trade and a prospect or two for the price of one. With Alonso’s mega deal looming in the near future, there’s points to ponder.
Will Alonso have a breakout season before age 34? What’s in store in the next few years? While Alonso is only 29, the future remains unclear. Much is still a mystery, especially the financial aspects.
I leave you with the thoughts below. What’s the worst that could happen by getting a few high value prospects in return for one player sent away? Isn’t this the approach the team likely has for its future? And lastly, is Alonso wanting to be a part of it long term as far as commitment is concerned?
