NY Mets: Team Still has Work To Do Even if They Sign Pete Alonso Despite Huge Offseason Haul

The 2025 New York Mets have a ton of work to do, despite the potential re-signing of star first baseman Pete Alonso. While the team recently inked Juan Soto to a 15 year, $765 million dollar deal, that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean everything is good to go. Here is an in depth look at what I mean by that.

The Mets still have questions surrounding third base, for starters. While Mark Vientos, 25, had quite the bounce back season in 2024, the other options remain 3B Brett Baty, 25, and 3B/SS Ronny Mauricio, 23.

Infielder Luisangel Acuรฑa, 22, the younger brother of Atlanta Braves Superstar Ronald, remains a solid option as well.

These guys represent the future of the hot corner/left side of the infield. Trading away one and deciding who is the best candidate to get the job is something that trial and error can only decide. Mistakes will be made, and so will decisions.

The team will not magically go from a third place team to a division leader in just one or two years.

Itโ€™s going to take years of consistently holding their own in ballgames. Itโ€™s going to take years of not stranding runners in key situations and building an elite pitching rotation. For starters, inking Sean Manaea to the three year deal was a huge plus and a great start. Manaea paired with Kodai Senga, 31, should solve at least two concerns in the rotation.

And this is assuming Pete Alonso, 30, re-signs this winter. Alonso, a free agent, is heavily relied on for a source of power and offensive support mid games.

If Alonso is not brought back, finding his replacement is going to be somewhat of a challenge.

Mets fans, what do you think? Do you agree that Alonso is the heart and soul of the team? Let me know in the comments, and if you like posts like these, tell a friend to hit that follow button, it is to receive the best Mets takes directly from my blog. Go on, subscribe now! Letโ€™s Go Mets!
